It’s been a long time since the last Rock Band title was released, but get ready to jam with that plastic guitar all over again because Rock Band 4 is coming to Xbox One and PS4 later this year!

Given the huge amount of past Rock Band DLC and, of course, the instruments crowding living rooms everywhere, there are many questions about how legacy content (both software and hardware) will be handled for the next-gen version.  Luckily, Harmonix already has a pretty good FAQ right HERE.  Here are some highlights:

Q: Will my old DLC work on the next gen console of the same type, i.e. PS3 -> PS4?

A: Yes! Content purchased from the store or exported from a disc will transfer over to the new generation of consoles at no additional cost as we make that content available.

Q: Will my old DLC work if I bought a different next gen console, i.e. Xbox 360 -> PS4?

A: Cross platform DLC compatibility is not entirely within our control, as DLC ownership is managed by the 1st parties.

Q: Will my old hardware work?

A: We’re already working closely with Mad Catz, Sony, and Microsoft on solutions for letting you use legacy hardware on new consoles. This is a challenge on both the software side and hardware side, but something we’d love to happen. We’ll have more information on this in the coming months.

Q: Will you be making new hardware?

A: Yes we will! You can preorder a new PAX East exclusive guitar if you come by the Harmonix booth! We’re working with Mad Catz, who has a lot of history with RB gear, and we’re excited to get more instruments back into the world.

If that doesn’t have you ready to rock, have a look at this behind the scenes video with the team behind Rock Band 4 :

The good news about all this is that old DLC will be supported.  The bad news is compatibility with old instruments is still uncertain.  Wii U and PC versions aren’t happening either, at least not in the foreseeable future.  Harmonix says this is because they “had to prioritize opportunities on other platforms with historically larger RB audiences”.

But for Xbox One and PS4 users, the countdown to Rock Band 4 begins.  It will be May before Harmonix releases any more info on the game, but to celebrate the announcement, they’re offering a free downloadable track for “I Still Believe,” recorded by UK-based songwriter Frank Turner.  The track is available right now for Xbox 360 and PS3, so dust off those guitars and drum sets!
