During the slew of announcements during Sony’s E3 press conference today, Square Enix announced the long-awaited remake of Final Fantasy VII. After teasing trailers and veiled hints for over a decade, production has begun on a full remake of the iconic title for the PS4. Development for the remake will be led by key members from the original project, such as producer Yoshinori Kitase, director Tetsuya Nomura, and scenario writer Kazushige Nojima. With such talented and proven leadership, particularly having been involved in the original production, Final Fantasy VII Remake (final title not yet confirmed) is sure to be an impressive installment in a beloved series.

For newcomers to the series, or those who got into gaming more recently, Final Fantasy VII is regarded universally as a hallmark title in the RPG genre. It was first released in 1997 on the original PlayStation system, and received the highest praise for its unique characters, truly epic storyline, and breathtaking movie sequences created using the most cutting-edge technology at the time. Even now, the game continues to inspire critics and fans alike, and has even caused the creation of spin-offs, films, and merchandise. To put it in perspective, Final Fantasy VII has sold 11 million copies worldwide, which is roughly 10% of the total sales from the entire Final Fantasy series.

Although not many details have been released, there are announcements waiting in the days to come. But Square Enix has not left us with nothing but a promise, releasing an awe-inspiring trailer to show off an early look at the remake. As someone who’s never played a Final Fantasy game…would this be a good place to start?!

I would definitely say yes! It’s still regarded as one of the best in the series, and I’ve never talked to another Final Fantasy fan who didn’t rank it in their top 3.
