E3 2015 has been an impressive ride so far, and one of the many announcements that made fans go wild was Shenmue 3. There’s so much hype for this game, in fact, that the initial $2 million funding goal on Kickstarter was surpassed in just twelve hours. Wow.
The long-awaited Shenmue 3 will be available on PC and PlayStation 4, and is being built in Unreal Engine 4. Just a few screenshots and a short video have been released so far, but as the Kickstarter page says, it’s a work in progress.
A $29 pledge will get you a digital copy of the game on PC or PS4, along with the ability to participate in polls and surveys that will help shape its development. If you bump up your pledge to $60 you’ll score a physical copy for PC that includes an exclusive, backer-only case.
The story in Shenmue 3 begins right where the second game left off. Protagonist Ryo Hazuki has traveled to China in search of the person who killed his father. Along the way he meets a new travelling companion, Shenhua, and together they begin a journey that takes them deeper into the mysteries surrounding Ryo’s family and closer to their ultimate destiny.
The original Shenmue was released in 2000 for the Sega Dreamcast and at the time, there was nothing else quite like it. Players were given a huge world to freely explore, and the game’s narrative was complex and engrossing. The majority of the time was spent talking to people trying to figure out what happened to your father, but occasionally there were some cool martial arts battles tossed in. Shenmue was one of the first games to incorporate quick time events (QTEs) in both battles and other scenarios, and although QTEs are frowned upon these days it was new and exciting stuff back then. There were also lots of side quests, randomly changing weather conditions and fun mini-games that made Shenmue the fan-favorite it is today. It will be very interesting to see what’s in store for the third installment!
