Miitomo, the ambiguous “mobile game” is now open for pre-registration, according to Nintendo. We first learned about the game this past October, during a Nintendo strategy briefing for investors in Japan. The industry giant revealed that they would launch five mobile games this year, in an attempt to dip their toe into this ever-booming revenue source.
The app will be “free to start,” according to Nintendo, implying a “Freemium” purchasing platform.
So what exactly IS Miitomo?
Miitomo is an interactive chat “game,” in which each participant is represented by a customize-able, talking Mii avatar. Those who have already created a Mii can import theirs from the Wii U or Nintendo 3DS systems using a QR Code. Once you’ve added your friends via social media, you will be prompted to answer some questions about yourself. Examples might be your favorite color, food, type of music, etc.
Miitomo then prompts conversations with your friends with questions like, “Did you know that so-n-so’s favorite food is pizza?” The idea is that your friends will start talking about it, and get to know you better as a person.
“Miitomo makes it easy for people to express themselves and interact with their friends in new and fun ways.” said Scott Moffitt, Nintendo of America’s Executive Vice President of Sales & Marketing. “Preregistering now is the best way to be among the first to get in on the fun when Miitomo launches next month.”
Users can earn or buy Miitomo Coins, which can be redeemed in the in-app shop. The store will host a number of clothing options for your Mii character, from accessories and shirts to costumes, like a bear, pirate or hot dog.
The Miifoto feature lets you pose your Mii characters in a variety of ways with stamps, or by combining their Mii image with photos. You can then share your creations with friends via social media, like Instagram, Twitter and Facebook.
Launching alongside Miitomo in March, My Nintendo is a rewards program that allows you to earn points for interacting with Nintendo products and services. Miitomo users with a Nintendo Account will be able to take advantage of My Nintendo immediately.
PLUS: Those who create their Nintendo Account before Miitomo launches will also receive Platinum Points for the new My Nintendo rewards program.
