#GDC16: PlayStation VR Specs, Prices and Games

Posted on by HB Duran

It’s no surprise that Virtual Reality has thus far dominated every tech conference this year, and GDC has been no exception! Sony has finally announced details for their much-anticipated, PlayStation VR headset (aka PS VR) and we’ve compiled the features for you right here!

Launch Date: October 2016

“Ever since we unveiled PS VR during the 2014 Game Developers Conference, we’ve received a tremendous response from gamers and developers alike,” said Andrew House, President and Global CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. “To make sure that we are able to prepare and deliver enough units of PS VR and a wide variety of software titles to consumers worldwide, we have decided to launch PS VR in October 2016. For those who are looking forward to its launch, we would like to thank everyone for their patience and continued support. We are beyond excited to deliver to consumers the amazing experience that PS VR offers.”

Suggested Retail Price: 44,980 yen, $399 USD, €399 and £349

As with all new technology, the price point may force many consumers to wait before diving in to the PS VR experience. This is, however, a stand-alone console unit, so it makes sense to have a price comparable to the PS4. Like many new gaming platforms, you might be wondering how many games will be available at launch, which will also affect pre-orders and launch day purchases.

 PlayStation VR Games and Modes:

According to a press release statement by Sony, there are more than 230 developers and publishers working on PS VR software titles, from indie studios to 2K Games, Konami, Capcom and Ubisoft, which doesn’t even scratch the surface. Let’s just say we have a list of all the PS VR Third-Party Game Developers and Publishers…and it’s 3 pages long.

This amounts to over 160 upcoming titles, including:

  • Eagle Flight (Ubisoft)
  • EVE: Valkyrie (CCP Games)
  • Headmaster (Frame Interactive)
  • Rez Infinite (Enhance Games)
  • Wayward Sky (Uber Entertainment)
  • RIGS: Mechanized Combat League
  • Tumble VR
  • Until Dawn: Rush of Blood
  • PlayStation®VR WORLDS (SCE WWS)
  • PS VR-Exclusive Star Wars Battlefront (Electronic Arts Inc.)
  • and hundreds more to be announced…

The Playroom VR by SCE WWS will be available as a free download from PlayStation Store to all PS VR owners, simultaneously with the launch of the system.

The Playroom VR will be free to download on launch day.

The Playroom VR will be free to download on launch day.

Cinematic mode will allow users to experience a number of standard PS4 games and videos through the PlayStation VR headset, as well as a number of PS4 features such as Share Play and Live from PlayStation. The headset will also take users into 360 degrees photos and videos that are captured by devices such as omnidirectional cameras on PS VR via PS4 Media Player.
