Capcom just announced that their Resident Evil 7 demo has exceeded two million downloads, the most-downloaded first-person demo in PlayStation 4 history. Unveiled during this year’s Sony E3 press conference, Resident Evil 7 (aka Resident Evil: biohazard) appears to be returning to its suspenseful roots.

Utilizing high-definition graphics, eerie sound effects and “found-footage,” the demo seems to be inspired by the P.T. demo used to announce the since-cancelled Silent Hills game. The resulting excitement from North American fans led to record-breaking downloads of the Resident Evil 7 demo in just the first seven days.

The playable demo, itself is not what was seen during E3, but a tie-in to the Kitchen demo as well as the main game, which is scheduled to release next January. The Resident Evil 7 Teaser: Beginning Hour demo has the player waking up inside a dilapidated cottage on an ominous plantation mansion.

RE7 is being built from the ground-up on the new, Resident Evil Engine and will be played from a first-person perspective for the first time in the series. Capcom says that the latest game is, in fact, returning to its roots and “Will deliver an experience reminiscent of the series’ signature gameplay including exploration, puzzles and a realistic tense atmosphere for players to encounter but will offer a complete refresh of the gameplay systems to propel the survival horror experience to the next level.”

PlayStation Plus subscribers can now download the standalone, Resident Evil 7 demo for PlayStation 4 and have first access before it hits other consoles in the near future. Resident Evil 7: biohazard is scheduled to launch January 27, 2017 for PS4, XBox One and PC.
